There was a time that I would have been upset about the first part of your post. But that was a younger, more naïve, version of me who still believed whole-heartedly in the value of hard work and that if you put your nose to the grindstone, the company and/or management will notice and reward you for your efforts.

Having been through several jobs where all I got was a metaphorical pat on the shoulder and maybe a "good job" for the exceptional weeks, an all quiet on the home front when things went as expected for weeks on end, and then berated for things going wrong outside of my control or working overtime to ensure everything gets done... even when it was management who suggested I stay past my normal hours to take care of extra things at work, and once learned from a coworker that the district manager gloated about how he managed to get me to accept a bad deal in a heavy increase of my duties but with fairly minimal compensation, because I didn't know how to properly negotiate my position...

I also understand getting passed over for promotions or even more stable work positions since a supervisor didn't like me much. After a year at a job I specifically went to my field supervisor and asked if I could start taking the lead on jobs, even going out of my way to ask to get involved in a multi-year program that would have me do advanced job training outside of normal work hours, and would eventually lead to me getting onto larger scale projects. In both instances I just wanted to make myself be more useful to the company but... was denied.

I now say "Good for you."

Keep doing what you love and are inspired to do.

I agree with you dude, it would've upset me too I thought I was spoiled. It's a sad reality of the modern work day today. Most of us are pretty expendable in it, and it's hard to get a straight answer. I learned moving forward to really vet a job out prior to taking it. Thanks for reading.

Take care of yourself, big homie. And F the man, they're always trying to screw the little guy. Have you thought about returning to conventions?

It wouldn't hurt to give that a shot again, had fun the last time.
